Superman is here to save the economy through the
Public Educational System. By now you may have heard
Superman is not coming as explained in the
new movie, “Waiting For Superman”. However, Mark
Zuckerman (CEO and Owner of Facebook), Chris Christie
(Governor of New Jersey), and Corey Booker (Mayor of
Newark), and Arne Duncan (US Secretary of Education)
are ambitiously creating a new national paradigm for
excellence in education. Parents, leaders in business,
teachers, and unions are involved in this process.
Mark Zuckerman is pledging a matching grant of
100 million dollars to improve Newark’s schools.
Target has pledge 1,000,000 books to primary aged
readers across the nation. A two day Educational
Summit is also being held in New York to discuss how
to change the two hundred year old system to meet the
needs of the 21st Century.
It is being reported that over a 1/3 of high
schoolers in America do not graduate from high school.
That is an unbelievable surprising high number. I know
in my local school district graduation rate was about
97%. I do know that it is difficult to track students
due to this highly mobile society. In any event, I
believe that many students in America do not read or study
at home after school; and overall are poor readers
and writers. Colleges are having to do a lot of
remediation in reading and math.
Oprah was used last Friday, Sept. 25, 2010,
as an avenue to kick-off saving Newark’s schools and
students; and hoping that the new educational paradigm
developed will be caught across America. On Oprah,
it was stated that to have an excellent and special
democracy one must first have an excellent and special
educational system. We must create hope for each child
so they will choose education over drugs and violence.
Newark might take a look at Kalamazoo Schools in Michigan.
A philanthropist is guaranteeing college for Kalamazoo high
school graduates who choose to succeed in school.
The million of dollars being spent by Mark
Zuckerman will certainly provide the needed technology
tools to help students achieve in math and science.
Schools currently do not have budgets for pencils let
alone for computers, ipads, and software. This new
cathedral of learning is designed to (a.) support
teachers, (b.) be accountable, and (c.) support
schools for Excellence.
Being the cynic I am, I hope it is not to
indoctrinate students in the liberal agenda nor designed
for the promotion of school loans so students become
indebted to the government for life. Right now
graduates are having an extremely tough time paying on
their student loans, because they cannot even land
a job of any kind. So, I truly hope that it will stimulate
creative thinking, and the desire for independence and
freedom to pursue any imaginable dream as they race
to the top.
It takes more than money to change attitudes, perceptions,
and direction. As the old adage goes, one can give a man a
fish and he will eat for a day; or one can teach a man to
fish and he will eat for a lifetime. However, no man
can fish if his pond is full of constraints, rules, and
restraints like Obama’s agenda and the Democratic
platform. Perhaps Mark Zuckerman’s pledge will stimulate
and promote the entrepreneurial spirit.
